God the Artist: Vision

I’m releasing a little series: God the Artist.  It’s minimalistic. I want to let you do your thinking and I’ll do mine.

“The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters” (Genesis 1:2 NLT).

What was He thinking about there, hovering over the surface of the waters? The universe. The galaxies. The solar systems. Our solar system. The planets. Our planet. The human story. Me.

  1. I imagine this description of God having an intimate moment with his impending creation like an artist staring at a blank canvas, contemplating their first stroke. That said, I agree with Trey; the text is alluding to God’s omnipresence.

  2. Perhaps it is a mistake to delineate the time. Perhaps it moved from one to the other and the “hovering over the waters” is an expression of God’s presence to creation (perhaps one that continues now). There was no pause, God simply continued to create.
